In my opinion, I am pro imperialism. Imperialism matters a lot, it helps to grow your country. America used to be very small back to the 1800s and most people did not trade with them. But that all change because they discovered imperialism. The United States used their army to take over territories and different colonies. With that the United States started to join ranks of the higher country's and started to trade more and start new businesses. As said in United States History Modern America “The United States was abandoning isolationism and emerging as a new power on the global stage” (Taylor 138). The definition of Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. The United States wants all the power they can get. They want to benefit the Americans. If we did have imperialism we would not be where we are today. We would not have Hawaii which. Is one of the biggest tourist centers of the world. That brings a lot of revenue to the country. Some of the resources that are abstained when taking over these countries are not available to un Americans in the United States. So, when imperialism happens they gain their natural and man made resources. That also benefits the United States. We are able to expand on their land and built more jobs for people so they can get paid and have a better life. But with expanding there are also downfalls. Now the United States has to protect more territories. That means our military has to be on there top of there game. In the book it says “ To expand and protect their interests around the world, imperialism nations built up their military strength” ( Taylor 139). They advanced their military power, and Alfred T. Mahan had a key role in that. He transformed America into a naval power. They needed more fuel and supplies so they had to us imperialism to take over the enemy's fuel stops. Overall I think that imperialism was good back in the 1800s.
Immigration Personally, I am pro immigration. Immigration is actually rapidly growing. As said in Growing Plains- America In the 1890s, “Out of the seventy million Americans living in the mid -1890s, more than 45% were immigrants”. And from there is just keeps growing. They were also helped make America's Diversity more broad. A lot of them came from the southern part of Europe. Say you were walking down the street you could tell they were from the southern part of Europe. As a country we should hope to have diversity. Diversity is good to have it will give people opportunities to prosper in a different lifestyle. We could also learn from them and we would also have to learn about the culture so that makes us more smart. Once they got here they moved into the big cities populating them and filling up the jobs. In the article it states “ ...presence was increasingly felt by america's business and political elite”. With that being said by the immigrants helped benefit America. Plus, if you wanted urban growth (which most people do) immigrants are a big part of that. So that's why we should have immigration in America.
The Spanish American War I looked out to the canal and I saw an explosion. I knew it was the battleship Maine right when I saw the explosion. I don't know how it could've happened! The ship sank very quickly it seemed to killed more than half of its crew. What a sad day. I could hear people out my window yelling “ remember the Maine, to hell with Spain”. That's when I knew something big has started. The thing is we have been trying to fight the Spanish Rule in Cuba and the Philippines for the longest time be we never had enough money or resources. Then American came into the picture and offered to help us. So they fought in Cuba. There was a lot of bombing and battle ships off the coast fighting. Overall I heard of this Treaty Of Paris which is an agreement “guaranteeing the independence of Cuba, the treaty also forced Spain to cede Guam and Puerto Rico to the United States”(https://history.state.gov/milestones/1866-1898/spanish-american-war).
